Every seller on Amazon faces the same question sooner or later: who prepares your inventory for FBA? Amazon has strict requirements, and shipments that miss them get delayed, rejected or hit with fees. You have three real options, and each fits a different stage of business.
What FBA prep actually involves
Before Amazon accepts your inventory, every unit and every carton has to meet its standards. Depending on the product, that can mean FNSKU labels on every unit, poly bags with suffocation warnings, bubble wrap for fragile items, bubble or bag sealing for liquids, expiration date labels, bundling multi-packs, and cartons packed and labeled to Amazon’s shipping plan. It is detailed, repetitive work, and Amazon checks it.
Option 1: Do it yourself
When you are small, doing your own prep can make sense. You control quality and you pay only for materials. The cost is your time. Founders who spend evenings labeling units are not spending them on product, marketing or sales. And if you get a requirement wrong, the shipment can be refused at the fulfillment center, which costs freight both ways plus the delay.
Option 2: Let Amazon prep for you
Amazon offers its own prep service for a per-item fee. It is simple to switch on, but the fees add up fast as volume grows, and Amazon will not do custom work like building kits, adding your own inserts or fixing packaging problems. It is a convenience, not a partner.
Option 3: Use a 3PL prep center
A prep center does the work before Amazon ever sees your inventory: receiving, labeling, bagging, bundling and building compliant cartons. For importers, a warehouse near the port can receive the container, prep everything and forward it to Amazon, so your goods never pass through your own space. The right prep center also catches problems early, like damaged units or wrong barcodes, while they are still cheap to fix. When you compare costs, count your own hours honestly: most growing brands find a prep center cheaper than doing it themselves, and far cheaper than Amazon’s per-item fees at scale.
Which one fits you?
- Just starting, a few units a week: do it yourself and learn the requirements first-hand.
- Growing past your spare time, or importing containers: a 3PL prep center usually pays for itself.
- Occasional overflow or a one-off urgent shipment: Amazon’s prep service can plug a gap.
